What Does a Forensic Nurse Actually Do?

More Than What Television Shows

As a forensic nurse, one of the most common misconceptions I encounter is that forensic nursing is simply about collecting evidence after an assault. That narrow view misses the depth of the role. Forensic nurses provide compassionate medical assessment, documentation, injury evaluation, safety-focused care, referrals, education, and survivor-centered support. Some encounters involve evidence collection. Many involve much more.

What Forensic Nursing Actually Includes

Forensic nursing blends healthcare, trauma-informed communication, documentation, public health awareness, and collaboration. Depending on the setting, responsibilities may include medical assessment, injury documentation, STI prevention discussions, pregnancy prevention options when appropriate, photography per protocol, evidence handling, mandated reporting considerations, referrals, and emotional support.

Myth Busting

Myth: forensic nurses only work with sexual assault cases.
Reality: forensic nursing spans interpersonal violence, abuse, strangulation concerns, elder abuse, child maltreatment, death investigation collaboration, human trafficking concerns, and more depending on training and role.

Myth: survivors must report to law enforcement to receive care.
Reality: this varies by jurisdiction and circumstance, but healthcare support and informed options matter.

Why It Matters

When trained forensic professionals are unavailable, survivors may face delays, fragmented care, or providers unfamiliar with trauma-sensitive best practices. Access matters. Education matters. Systems matter.
